History of the 6914th Radio Squadron Mobile (RSM)

The 6914th RSM dates back to December 8, 1953, when the 85th RSM was formed at Kelly AFB, Texas. On that day, Flight A of the 85th was organized at Sembach AB, Germany, assuming the personnel, functions, and responsibilities of Det 2, 12th RSM, originally stationed at Kaufbeuren.

On April 17, 1954, the 85th RSM deployed from Kelly AFB to Sembach, arriving on May 1, and absorbing the men, equipment, and functions of of Flight A, which was then discontinued. Admin and billeting were located at Sembach, but the operational site, originally at Landstuhl AB, was contructed on a hill overlooking Grunstadt am Weinstrasse, being completed in 1955. The unit's primary mission was radio intercept of Morse code and voice traffic of the Soviet 24th Air Army.

On May 8, 1955, the 85th RSM was inactivated, and redesignated and organized as the 6914th RSM at Sembach. The unit was assigned to the 6910th Security Group at this time. The redesignation was directed by HQ USAF, to have Security Service unit designations conform to the standard USAF four-digit designation pattern.

The 6914th RSM was redesignated the 6910th Radio Group Mobile (RGM) on September 1, 1956 and assigned to the 6900th Security Wing. The 6910th moved to Darmstadt on May 15, 1961 and was discontinued on August 1, 1963.
